The Second Thinking on Two Wheels Cycling Conference

 

The 2nd Thinking on Two Wheels Cycling Conference was held in Adelaide, Australia on Monday 16th January 2006, hosted by the University of South Australia (UniSA). The venue for this conference was the Adelaide Hilton Hotel, the premier accommodation and function venue for the Jacob's Creek tour Down Under six-day cycle race that started the day after the conference.

UniSA and Cycling Research

Professor Robin King speaking to guests at the Tour Down Under.Stage One of the Jacob's Creek Tour Down under was held at Mawson Lakes on Wednesday 17th January. To celebrate the start of the race, and UniSA's involvement in the Tour, Professor Robin King, (Pro Vice Chancellor, Division of Information Technology, Engineering and the Environment) hosted a breakfast for 80 guests, both internal and external to the university.

Professor King addressed the guests with a speech which focused on UniSA's commitment to research in environmental sustainability, cycling being one of the topics. A copy of Professor King's speech is available.

The following two articles: "Diabetics ride for a better life" and "Cycling the new golf as eco-friendly bikes outsell cars" featured in Higher Education, The Australian, Wednesday 18th January 2006. Both of these articles highlight cycling related research undertaken by UniSA.


Thinking on Two Wheels' Keynote Speaker

Professor John Pucher

The keynote speaker was Professor John Pucher of Rutgers University in the United States who has published extensively on urban transport systems and travel behaviour with a particular focus on the non-motorised modes of walking and cycling. Professor Pucher is a lively and passionate speaker whose authority (and passion) is derived from having studied transport policy and systems in many countries including the USA, Canada, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, India, Germany, the Netherlands, and South Korea.

It is now Australia's turn to learn from Professor Pucher while he is a Visiting Professor at the Institute of Transport and Logistic Studies at the University of Sydney. 


Aim of the conference

The aim of the conference is to primarily promote debate and discussion on cycling issues concerned with:

The Conference will feature presentations as diverse as the influence of cycling in travel behaviour change, new bicycle designs, modelling bicycle motion and cyclist performance, electric power-assisted bicycles, a panel discussion on attitudes to the cycling body, and the use of cycling as a context for teaching a high school curriculum.
