Examples of Previous Research Projects:

•  Effects of grazing and climate change on shrub population dynamics in arid rangelands.   Development of a mathematical-ecological model (Shrubpop) to predict the future of shrub populations under grazing and climate change.

• Woody weed invasions in arid lands (Opuntia robusta - Wheel Cactus).  Opuntia robusta is an escaped garden/hedge plant that has become highly invasive in the Flinders Ranges and nearby pastoral regions. 

• Rangeland condition & herder livelihoods, Gobi Desert, Mongolia & China.  PhD student Jane Addison is currently in Mongolia collecting data on range condition and herder economic viability to determine best practice rangeland management systems.

• Vegetation restoration (Deptartment of Water Land & Biodiversity Conservation & Australian Defence Force, Port Wakefield).   This work involves PhD student Mike Heath and Honours student Rina Aleman.  A comparison of remnant, revegetated and farm land shows good recovery of boil biodiversity on revegetated land.

• Mine site rehabilitation (Iron Baron Mine, Onesteel).  A comparison of terracing, seeding and top soiling for mine site rehabilitation has shown that terracing alone will achieve good plant cover,  but seeding and top soiling will achieve better results for a biodiverse ecosystem.
