Supporting a passion to learn against the odds
Winning a place at uni may have been the goal in 2003 but for some students managing to stay at uni is this year’s challenge.
UniSA is home to many students who through no fault of their own will struggle to stay at uni. Those students facing financial or other barriers to education - such as distance, non-English speaking backgrounds, or disabilities – can find it tough to keep their mind on study while keeping the wolf from the door.
Keen to help talented students realise their professional goals, UniSA and its partners will present 35 special grants totalling $42,000 to help students make the transition to university.
The presentation of the Transition Grants will take place today, Wednesday May 26 2003, from 5pm –7pm in the Council Room, level 4, Yungondi Building at UniSA’s City West campus.
The Transition Grants cover four categories:
§ 20 metropolitan grants of $1000 each provided by UniSA, HomeStart Finance; CPS Credit Union and Nursing Agency of Australia;
§ 7 rural/isolated grants of $1,500 each provided by UniSA and HomeStart Finance;
§ 7 UniSA-Mutual Community grants of $1500 each for rural/isolated students enrolled in a Health Sciences program;
§ A UniSA-Smith Family Learning for Life grant which includes a $6000 scholarship over three years plus a transition grant of $1000 provided by International Power.
The grants are funded with generous support from individual donors, including previous graduates of UniSA.
About 600 students applied for scholarships at UniSA this year. Under the Commonwealth Learning Scholarships Scheme, 200 scholarships valued at $2000 or $4000 were awarded and 35 transition grants were also awarded. Students say the money is used for a range of vital needs from bond money to rent city accommodation for rural students, to books, and meeting other study and materials expenses during semester.
Organisations interested in providing scholarships for students at UniSA can contact Yvonne Clark at UniSA on (08) 8302 0972.
