UniSA welcomes tram as part of our smart city

Vice Chancellor of the University of South Australia Professor Denise Bradley has welcomed the State Government proposal to extend the tramline to City West campus on North Terrace as a move that is in tune with the sustainable future of Adelaide.

“There has been a steady rejuvenation of the western end of the city,” Professor Bradley said.

“Today at the UniSA campus alone, more than 5000 students and 600 staff work and study each day. If you combine the student and staff populations from the TAFE Institutes nearby – you get a stronger sense of the new energy in the city’s west.”

Professor Bradley said some of the more exciting developments in Adelaide were occurring in the west end – including the completion last year of two state of the art teaching facilities at the University and the construction of UniSA’s landmark building on North Terrace. Due for completion next year, the building will be home to the second largest art gallery in the state and include conference and public lecture spaces planned as a hub for civic interaction.

“It is clear now that successful cities of the future will need to look at what factors make a city, liveable, workable, clean and sustainable,” Professor Bradley said.

“Light rail transport around the city can only improve the accessibility of Adelaide and our reputation internationally as a forward thinking, lively urban centre whose leaders are conscious of developing sustainable communities – environmentally and socially.”
