Art captures domestic dreaming

Artwork from Cinderalla II - The DreamerVideo, sound, performance, installations and hundreds of drawings all contribute to the materialisation of domestic dreams in an exciting new exhibition at the South Australian School of Art (SASA) Gallery at UniSA.

In the exhibition Cinderella II –The Dreamer artist, Gosia Wlodarczak explores the perceptions of the home and domestic space as a place both of dreams and everyday living.

“In a home, the imaginary and the real co-exist – one informs the other,” Wlodarczak says.

“Though this exhibition, my aim is to ‘materialise’ those dreams - to convert them into installation objects.”

Wlodarczak’s drawing installation in the exhibition comprises acrylic drawings on 890 small to medium sized panels, which make up stylised profiles of objects of desire, based on real items.

“Each of the original objects were things desired by my friends - a Rolls-Royce car, a Bang & Olufsen sound system and a Yhoji Yamamoto outfit,” Wlodarczak says.

“I then worked with a composer, Alistair Noble to create accompanying digital sounds to form another component of the exhibition. Video animation then adds yet another element.”

Cinderella II is one of a series of the SASA Gallery’s research-based exhibitions which engages external scholars to participate in the gallery’s exhibition and publication programs.

Guest scholar, Associate Professor Ian McLean from the University of Western Australia, has written an accompanying essay on Wlodarczak’s work and the exhibition, and he will be taking part in several of the artist’s events held throughout the exhibition.

SASA Gallery Director Mary Knights says that Wlodarczak’s exhibition is a perfect example of the innovation, experimentation and performance that is characteristic of the Gallery’s exhibitions.

“The SASA Gallery is developing as a leading contemporary art space and an active site of teaching and learning in South Australia,” Knights says.

“Our exhibitions draw in a variety of artists, scholars and academics so they present as cutting-edge happenings that encourage observers to do more than just look - they encourage thought, questioning and discovery.”
