UniSA and ANU Summer Research Scholarships
promote next generation researchers
The
Australian National University and the University of South Australia
today launched
20 special summer research scholarships for high
potential undergraduates who want to explore and develop research
careers.
The ANU-UniSA Summer Research Scholarships will be available each year to 10 students from each university across the summer period from mid-November to early-February.
Students will undertake eight-weeks of supervised research with leading researchers at the host institution. The scholarships will include a research stipend, an accommodation and living allowance for up to eight weeks, plus some travel expenses.
UniSA Vice Chancellor Professor Peter Høj said the Summer Research Scholarships would provide an opportunity to develop the research skills of some of the country’s brightest and best students.
“This scholarship program is the first important initiative in our partnership with ANU and it is appropriate that the objective of the program is to contribute to the development of future research excellence in Australia,” Prof Høj said.
“Our relationship with ANU is about nurturing talent and enriching students’ educational experience at each of our universities. The collaboration means we can offer students a deeper research experience, earlier in their careers and through that, contribute to our growing knowledge-based economy.”
Prof Høj said the scholarships would be available to enrolled undergraduate students at UniSA or ANU who are in the third or fourth year of a full-time program leading to an honours degree.
ANU Vice Chancellor Professor Ian Chubb said the summer scholarships provided greater opportunities for students to gain hands-on research experience in a professional setting, working alongside international calibre researchers.
“This will be an opportunity for students to benefit from the different but complementary research strengths of the two universities,” Prof Chubb said.
“The students will be immersed in a rich research environment – using materials and facilities not usually available to them - getting research team experience and networking with leaders in their field. It will also mean they can better evaluate and demonstrate their potential within the research environment.”
The scholarships will be allocated on academic merit and are expected to be highly competitive. Applications for the 2008/09 UniSA-ANU Summer Research Scholarships will close on September 19 2008.
