Personal Learning Environment
The trend in the use of information technology in higher education is
towards the provision of a Personal Learning Environment (PLE) that
enhances the learning experience of students and encourages staff to
innovate with curriculum design and teaching approaches.
UniSA’s vision of a personal learning environment is a fully integrated
environment rich in digital learning facilities (e.g. student to
student, and student to teacher communication and collaboration tools),
resources (internal and external content) and services (e.g. podcasts,
wikis, instant messaging) that are made available to students and staff
in a personalised way to facilitate quality teaching and learning.
UniSA’s PLE will have the capacity and flexibility to meet “standard” as
well as “cutting edge” teaching and learning activities.
On 18 June 2009, University Council approved the development of a Personal Learning Environment consisting of the following three components:
- a new learning management system - known as learnonline (link opens in new window)
- a program and course management system - known as PCMS (link opens in new window)
- a new student placement system - known as SPS (link opens in new window)
These key components will leverage the recent major investment in upgrading the University’s student management system “Medici” to provide a tightly integrated personal learning environment which will be delivered to students and staff through the Student and Staff Portals respectively (see figure below).
