Policy

1. Any person, not being a member of the University staff, who makes regular, significant contributions to the teaching, research or scholarship of the University shall be eligible for conferment of an honorary academic title or an honorary award (see Honorary Awards Policy as referenced above). This policy is concerned with the conferment of the honorary academic titles.

2. The titles available for conferral shall be:

Professor, Associate Professor, Senior Lecturer, Lecturer, Research Professor, Research Associate Professor, Senior Research Fellow, Research Fellow and Associate prefixed by one of the following designations, as appropriate:

Visiting - denotes an academic from another institution working in the University;

Adjunct - denotes a person, not being a member of the University staff, who makes regular, significant contributions to the teaching, research or scholarship of the University; Adjuncts may be previous members of staff, industry and international collaborators, or staff from other institutions This includes Clinical Adjuncts who contribute to the teaching of the University through the supervision of placements or teaching in clinical work. This subset of Adjuncts will have the title prefix 'Adjunct Clinical'.

The University may also confer the honorary academic title of ĎVice Chancellorís Professorial Fellowí on candidates who have achieved recognition for outstanding achievements in their chosen field or walk of life. These achievements will be in an area of relevance to one of the fields of education or research offered by the University. A Vice Chancellorís Professorial Fellow is entitled to use that title for the term of their appointment. A Vice Chancellorís Professorial Fellow will be an adjunct appointment.

3. The level of academic title shall be dependent on the nature of the contribution to the University and on the criteria applicable to the level of appointment of academic staff by the University. Any visitor who holds a full professorship at a recognised University normally will be granted Visiting Professor status.

4. An Adjunct who supervises research students must be admitted as a member of the Register of Research Degree Supervisors as required in Policy RES8.1.

5. An honorary academic title normally shall be awarded for the period of the visit; association or for a period not exceeding three years, whichever is the lesser.

6. The appointment of an Adjunct will only be enacted upon the signing of the University's standard Adjunct Relationship Deed.

 

Procedure

1. Nominations

All nominations for honorary academic titles shall be in writing and accompanied by information in support of the nomination.

Vice Chancellorís Professorial Fellow
Nominations can only be made by the Vice Chancellor.

Honorary titles at Associate Professor level or above

External parties and current UniSA staff (substantively employed as level C or below)
Nominations may be initiated by a member of the Senior Management Group or by a Director: Research Institute

Current UniSA staff (substantively employed as level D or above)
Nominations may be initiated by a Divisional Pro Vice Chancellor, Director Research Institute, or a Head of School.

All other honorary titles
Nominations may be initiated by a Divisional Pro Vice Chancellor, Director Research Institute, or a Head of School

2. Approvals

Senior Honorary Titles Committee

The Senior Honorary Titles Committee will consider all nominations for honorary academic titles at Associate Professor level or above, excluding when a current UniSA staff member is nominated for title at their current substantively held position.

The Senior Honorary Titles Committee comprises:

Vice Chancellor or nominee (Chair)
Provost and Chief Academic Officer
Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation)
Chair, Academic Board

and, if the nomination is supported, will approve the title and report to Council.

Divisional / Portfolio Pro Vice Chancellor

The Division will consider all nominations for honorary academic titles below Associate Professor level in addition to nominations from a current UniSA staff member nominated for a title at Associate Professor level or above where this is their current substantively held position.

The Pro Vice Chancellor or Research Institute Director or nominee will notify the recipient of the title in writing.

3. Reviews

Vice Chancellorís Professorial Fellow
Reviews will be conducted as required.

All other honorary academic titles

Reviews are to be conducted annually by the relevant Head of School or Director: Research Institute. Where this review results in the decision to review the level of a title, this is considered a new nomination and is to follow the nomination and approval procedures above.

4. Renewals

A nomination for the renewal of an honorary academic title at the completion of the current period is to follow the nomination and approval procedures above.

5. Rescissions

Following the annual review if it is determined that the anticipated contributions to the University by the adjunct, and the expected outcomes of the appointment have not been met (as detailed in the Adjunct Relationship Deed) the honorary academic title may be rescinded.

All recommendations for rescission are to be in writing and cite the specific nature of concerns with the appointment and expected versus achieved outcomes.

The rescinding of honorary academic titles is to follow the approval procedures above.
