Staff news and achievements

The staff of the School of Psychology, Social Work and Social Policy are active researchers, writers and teachers.  Here is some of their recent achievements and activities.

Highlights
  • Congratulations to Dr Siobhan Banks, from the Centre for Sleep Research (CfSR) who was one of two international recipients of a ‘Sleep Research Society (SRS) Young Investigator Award’ for a published paper. She will be presented with the award, and a $1000 honorarium, on 14 June at the SLEEP 2011 25th Anniversary Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA.

Research and Research Education
  • Dr Carole Zufferey has been successful in obtaining a $43,000 grant from the Department for Families and Communities (DFC) to work with them in 2011 on a research project titled: ‘Responding to Domestic and Aboriginal Family Violence in the Department for Families and Communities’.
  • Dr Owen Churches, Post-Doctoral Research Fellow (PSW) recently won a $500 prize from the International Survey for Autism Research (INSAR) for the best student paper. Owen will be presenting the paper at their International Meeting for Autism Research being held in May, in San Diego, California, USA. His paper is titled: ‘An Event-Related Potential Study of Familiar Face Processing In Autism Spectrum Conditions’.
  • Professor Bernard Guerin and Deirdre Tedmanson (PSW) co-presented three papers at the 7th Biennial International Critical Health Psychology Conference held in Adelaide during April. The papers were:
    ‘Bureaucratic stress syndrome and remote aboriginal communities’
    ‘Policy Dis-Stress: The unbearable ‘whiteness’ of being (Indigenous and remote)’
    ‘Framing the child’
  • The School of Psychology, Social Work and Social Policy has been awarded the Leading Research School award at the 2010 EASS Research Awards, for the second year running.  A Mid Career Researcher award has gone to Dr Sally Ferguson, and Dr Siobhan Banks (both of the Centre for Sleep Research) has received the Early Career Researcher award.  Congratulations to all our research award winners.  For a full list of EASS Research Awards to researchers in this school please go to the Research webpage.
     

 

Teaching and Learning
  • Four papers presented at the International Conference on Psychology Education, held in 2010, have been accepted for publication in the Third Edition of ‘Teaching Psychology Around the World’ (Editors Victor Karandashev and Sherri McCarthy), to be published by Cambridge Scholars Press in 2011. The four papers are:
