Completion Scholarships

International candidatesAustralian candidateUniSA Completion Scholarships enable research degree students in the final stages of writing their thesis to spend uninterrupted time (up to six months) to complete the thesis.

These scholarships are likely to be highly competitive, and limited numbers only are available. Scholarship payments will be made fortnightly in arrears. 

 

Purpose of the scholarship

Completion scholarships provide funding of up to six months living allowance*. They are directed primarily towards research degree students who are enrolled non-traditionally (eg candidates undertaking a PhD part-time). 

Generally, the panel will not consider applications from research degree students who have held a scholarship such as an APA, APA(I), USAPA, President's or division, institute or school scholarship. Only if there are exceptional or extenuating circumstances will consideration be given to allocating completion scholarships to prior scholarship holders.

* As an alternative to a living allowance, international students may prefer to have their tuition fees paid for one semester.


Are you eligible?

Research degree students must:

  • currently be enrolled at UniSA in either a doctoral degree by research or a masters by research
  • have completed their data collection or equivalent
  • be in the writing-up stage
  • be within their candidature time

AND

  • if part-time, or working, provide evidence that time release is available to work on the writing-up on a full-time basis
  • not hold a living allowance scholarship 
  • not be a continuing UniSA academic staff member.


Duration and value of the scholarship

Up to a maximum of six months. Preference may be given to applications for periods of less than six months. The stipend is paid at the Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) rate. These scholarships are tax-free.


How to apply

First, check that you are eligible.

Application form – RTF file (for pcs) and Word (for Macs)

  • Your application should be no more than two pages, plus a proposed work plan. In the work plan, address how your thesis will be completed within no more than six months of commencement of the scholarship.
  • You must obtain the support of your Principal Supervisor (or Associate Supervisor) for the application.
  • The application is also to include an objective report of progress by the Research Degree Coordinator. 
  • The Research Degree Coordinator will forward your application to the Divisional Dean for a recommendation.
  • The Divisional Dean will forward your application, with recommendations, to the Dean of Graduate Studies. A panel assists with the selection of successful candidates.

Closing date

Round 1 applications will close on 15 March (ongoing)
Round 2 applications will close on 15 August (ongoing)

You will be advised of the outcome of your application.


Assessment of your application

Assessment of your application will be based on the:

  • quality of the application
  • Supervisor and Research Degree Coordinator comments 
  • work plan and the likelihood of the thesis being completed within the nominated timeframe (no more than six months).


Conditions of the scholarship

Successful applicants will be required to enrol, and remain enrolled on a full-time basis at UniSA.

Leave of absence will not be available during the duration of the Completion Scholarship, unless there are exceptional circumstances.

During the write-up scholarship, progress will be monitored on a regular basis, in accordance with milestones outlined in the work plan (see the application form).

Failure to make satisfactory progress in line with the above milestones may mean the cessation of the scholarship payments.

Submission of the thesis for examination, with supervisor's approval, is required at the completion of the scholarship.
