About the program

The programs offered at UniSA provide a unique mix of academic quality and industry relevance. Taught by academic staff of UniSA’s School of Psychology, Social Work and Social Policy and the University of Adelaide, Discipline of Public Health. The joint program is designed to develop sound, solid professional generalist skills in Occupational Health and Safety. Offered at three levels to graduate students – Certificate, Diploma and Master’s levels, the program develops skills required to practice professionally in this demanding field. The core of the program is focused around the development of skills in OHS Law, Risk Management, Safety Statistics & Data Analysis, Incident Investigation, Occupational Hygiene, Ergonomics and an understanding of Occupational Disease and Epidemiology. Students in the Graduate Diploma and Masters can select, through negotiation with the Program Directors, a range of optional elective courses including the following:

Occupational Health and Safety is an area of prime importance in the management of enterprises and other workplaces, generating a demand for qualified occupational health and safety professional. This program is designed to enable graduates to work effectively in a range of OHS professional roles, such as:

The Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Masters Degree are nested programs which allow students to scale up or down in their qualification. Typically, all courses are offered online at least once a year. This may vary according to the availability of staff, enrolment numbers and industry demand. The focus on competency development and application across a diverse range of industries is the essential ingredient in employability, and the UniSA programs are designed to provide graduates with a real advantage in today’s job market.

Occupational Health and Safety Management Courses

The programs are built around an 18 month (full time equivalent) Masters by Coursework framework. There are three exit points built into the program: 1) a Graduate Certificate involving six-months full time equivalent of 18 units; (only available part-time). 2) a Graduate Diploma involving 12-months full-time equivalent of 36 units; and 3) a Masters involving an additional 18 units, with a total of 54 units.

The UniSA programs in Occupational Health and Safety Management provide the perfect mix between advanced theory, cutting-edge research, and practical application. The academic staff involved in the design and delivery of the programs all have significant experience working with industry on providing timely and cost-effective solutions to real-world problems. This industrybased focus is transferred to the programs, and students are guaranteed a program of study that is relevant to their needs.

This program of courses provides academic qualifications which have national and international application in the occupational health and safety profession.

The Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Masters Degree form an articulated sequence of programs allowing direct entry into any one program or progression according to educational needs.
