Australia Council for the Arts and Anne & Gordon Samstag ISCP Residency
The Samstag Program has become a key partner of the Australia Council for the Arts' Visual Arts Board, in an innovative cultural collaboration intended to provide professional development opportunities for Australian artists.
From 2010, the Visual Arts Board's International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP), New York studio, will be offered to Australian artists in partnership with the Samstag Program. Two annual studio residencies are offered, to be known as the 'Australia Council for the Arts and Anne & Gordon Samstag ISCP Residency'. Each residency, supported by associated accommodation in an apartment in Long Island, will provide a stipend of $25,000 (Australian dollars) per six-month period.
The experimental funding partnership has been inspired by the generous vision of Gordon Samstag – a born-and-bred New Yorker who cherished his hometown as a destination for Australian artists. Recipients of the Australia Council for the Arts and Anne & Gordon Samstag ISCP Residencies, will be formally acknowledged as Samstag Scholars.
The residency is tailored to suit the practical needs of the visiting artist by providing space to research and create artwork. The ISCP is located in East Williamsburg, an area housing one of the largest concentrations of artists worldwide. The ISCP website is www.iscp-nyc.org
