The Anne & Gordon Samstag International Visual Arts Scholarships were established in 1992 through the generous bequest of Gordon Samstag, an American artist who taught from 1961 to 1970 at the South Australian School of Art. They are renowned as 'golden passports' to professional success in the visual arts and for identifying artists of exciting talent, who progress to careers of high achievement.

The Anne & Gordon Samstag International Visual Arts Scholarships are awarded for study overseas in the visual arts. Each scholarship includes a tax-exempt stipend of institutional fees and return airfares.

Through a three-year partnership with the Australia Council’s Visual Arts Board, commencing in 2011, the Samstag Program sponsored a number of six-month residencies at the International Studio and Curatorial Program in New York, between 2011 and 2013. Six Australia Council for the Arts and Anne & Gordon Samstag ISCP Residencies were awarded under the partnership, providing each recipient a six-months residency supported by accommodation and a generous stipend.
