From IEA Press Release:
Researchers Win Top Award from the Liberty Mutual Group and the IEA - Winning Investigation Digs Deeper into Occupational Health and Safety Management
The 2008 Liberty Mutual Medal in Occupational Safety and Ergonomics will be awarded to an Australian-based research team that completed the largest study of occupational health and safety in the Australian mining industry and possibly the world. Selected by the International Ergonomics Association, the winning paper provided detailed information about the effectiveness of occupational health and safety management with respect to work hours and fatigue management; production bonus and safety incentive schemes; and occupational health and safety management systems, including consultation. The researchers will receive the award at the Annual Conference of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of Australia, in Adelaide, Australia, November 17-19, 2008.
The winning researchers include Project Leader Andrea Shaw, (Shaw Idea Pty Ltd); Associate Professor Verna Blewett, PhD. (New Horizon Consulting Pty Ltd); Laurie Stiller, (Beyond Words); Christine Aickin, M.P.H., O.H. (Workability Pty Ltd); Professor Drew Dawson and Sally Ferguson, PhD. (Centre for Sleep Research, University of SA); Stephen Cox, Ph.D. (Stephen Cox Consulting); and Professor Kaj Frick Ph.D. (Malardalen University, Vasteras, Sweden).
The report on their project, Digging Deeper, can be downloaded from the NSW Department of Primary Industries website (http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/minerals/safety/consultation/digging-deeper). The research project, commissioned by the NSW Mine Safety Advisory Council, was a comprehensive investigation of occupational health and safety management within the New South Wales (NSW) mining industry. Researchers collected in-depth, quantitative data from more than 60 percent of the industrys workplaces and qualitative data from more than 50 sites. Participative workshops for the whole industry helped to validate data and to develop improvement strategies. The Digging Deeper report provides detailed, reliable, and credible information about three key issues - hours of work and fatigue management, production bonus and safety incentive schemes, and occupational health and safety management systems, including consultation. The paper also presents The Platinum Rules, a list of 10 key action areas the researchers prepared that codify the fundamental steps the mining industry should take to more effectively manage occupational health and safety.
