Principles of Lean Thinking
Week 1 Peter Hines
"Peter Hines has helped me to gain a better understanding of Lean by highlighting how it is more than a shop floor improvement system using a set of tools. Now I look at our organisation (including our suppliers and customers) and understand Lean by looking at the processes rather than the organisational departments that use these processes. These processes encompass ALL of the extended enterprise. When mapped and improved upon by a cross functional team approach (comprised of players who actually use these processes) employee involvement and understanding follows producing significant real improvements.
Peter then showed how a strategy based approach can be used to develop a plan and method for deploying such a system across the extended enterprise. This formulates and links all of the improvement activities across the extended enterprise and should support and underpin an organisation's mission and vision. The final (and most difficult) question: "How do you go about successfully introducing sustainable Lean into your organisation" then starts to be answered."
Week 2 John Bisheno
Understanding that lean is more than a set of tools on the shop floor in a manufacturing environment. Seeing lean as a way of running any business by understanding its value streams and using a cross functional team approach to make these streams at the pull of the customer and to continuously revisit and improve them. Having this understanding is the first step. Getting your own organisation to understand and embrace this concept then becomes the next challenge.

I personally found the course excellent and thought provoking.
It has given me the knowledge and confidence to engage members of the senior management at ATEC in discussion about implementing Lean Principles at ATEC.
The pace and content of the course was excellent. John on many occasions backtracked and provided additional examples to ensure people understood. I would endorse this course to anyone involved in manufacturing or service industry who is trying to provide a product or service.
W (Bill) Jeffery)
Case Manager Training ATEC
I found the course very informative. The workload was substantial but presented in a logical manner which meant my uptake was good. Peter was good at mixing the day up with presentations, activities and catch-up moments. He was very approachable when I needed some more clarity.
The course content was spot on. In my role I need to implement projects that align with corporate strategy. This course has allowed me to create logical progression from strategy, through issue generation, and on to specific task and projects. I can show project alignment to objectives when they exist, as well as discuss rationally if someone is promoting a hobbyhorse. The course has helped me to more objectively assess blockers and enablers as I drill down into each task, and has given me the confidence that the projects are properly scoped and prioritised to meet company objectives. PS. I have had less trouble getting resources for projects since adopting this approach.
