Student writing reaches the shelf
Two books showcasing the work of more than 50 UniSA students from the past and present have been launched and are now available at a bookshop near you.
The
books – Talk of the Town and Heart of the Matter – were officially
introduced at the SA Writers' Centre on April 28 in front of Adelaide's
who's who of established and emerging writers and poets. On hand to launch
the books were Adelaide Lord Mayor Michael Harbison (who in a previous life
worked in publishing) and SA Writers' Week chair Katherine England.
First off the mark was Talk of the Town, a collection of stories and poems written by students over the past four years as part of Writing the City, a six day intensive writing course offered by UniSA's professional and creative writing team each summer.
Edited by Writing the City lecturer David Homer, Talk of the Town is an eclectic mix of pieces that examine, pontificate on and observe not only Adelaide but also cities around the world, from Beirut to Edinburgh and Sydney. (Homer was assisted by associate editors Nicole Dent, Rebecca Freeborn, Fleur Lewis, Louisa Mazzarelli, Jim Mussolini, Renee Naylon, Jessica Smith and Vanessa Tripodi).
The
second book launched, Heart of the Matter – An Introduction to Eighteen
South Australian Poets, was edited by UniSA lecturer Ioana Petrescu and
Professional Writing graduate Naomi Brewer, with the help of Tully Bates,
Jane Bettoney, Demelza Gers, Nathan Gogoll, Lauren Phillips, Gill Ratcliff
and Lisa Solomon.
The book is packed full of interesting insights into the work and lives of an array of home-grown poets.
Each chapter, written by a different student, focuses on a South Australian poet – from well established names like Peter Goldsworthy, Rory Harris and Tom Shapcott to emerging talent such as Amelia Walker (a UniSA nursing graduate whose first book of poems is now into its second print run.)
Both books were published by Lythrum Press and are available at Wakefield
Press, Imprints and Borders.
For your chance to win a copy of either book, email your name and postal address to
