Dr
Ian Gould AM

Dr Ian Gould commenced as Chancellor of the University of South Australia on 1 July 2008.
A geologist by profession, Dr Gould has forty years experience in the minerals industry in diverse and senior positions, mainly within the CRA and Rio Tinto Group, in which he was Group Executive for Exploration and later for Research and Development before becoming the Managing Director Australia, and then Group Managing Director for Normandy Mining Ltd.
Educated at the Sydney Technical High School and University of Sydney, Dr Gould has a PhD in geology.
Dr Gould has based his career upon a strong scientific interest and belief in the importance to the community of the mining industry, and has been a keen and early proponent of excellence in environmental management for the industry.
In 2007 Dr Gould became a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, and in the same year was awarded the Institute Medal by the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, of which he is also a Fellow and past President.
He has in-depth experience in corporate governance having served, mainly as Chair on a range of boards including the Australian Institute of Marine Science, the Australian Biological Resources Study, the CSIRO Minerals Sector Advisory Committee, the South Australian Resources Industry Development Board, the Royal Flying Doctor Service, St Andrew’s Hospital, and is a member of the South Australian Economic Development Board.
He is a professional with long experience in governance and leadership and a comprehensive understanding of the nexus between education, innovation, the community and business.
Ian was made a member of the Order of Australia (AM) in
the 2011 Queen’s Birthday Honours Awards for service to the mining industry,
particularly as a proponent of environmental management, to education as
Chancellor of the University of South Australia, and to the community.

Peter Høj

The former CEO of the Australian Research Council, he has been a teaching academic, a professor engaged in high quality research in biochemistry and viticulture, and an industry leader in his former role as the Managing Director of the Australian Wine Research Institute.
Educated at the University of Copenhagen, majoring in biochemistry and chemistry, Professor Høj has a Master of Science degree in biochemistry and genetics and a PhD in plant biochemistry. He speaks several languages and has received fellowships from Denmark and Australia for post-doctoral studies in biochemistry.
Since arriving in Australia in 1987 he has worked as a lecturer and senior lecturer in biochemistry at La Trobe University and Professor of Viticultural Science and Professor of Oenology at the University of Adelaide.
In 1992, he was awarded the Boehringer-Mannheim medal by the Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and in 2003 the Centenary Medal for his contribution to research and wine science. He is also a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering.
From October 2004 to April 2007 he was CEO of the Australian Research Council - the peak funding body for research in Australia.
He served as a private member of the Prime Minister's Science Engineering
and Innovation Council (PMSEIC) from 1999-2004 and as an ex officio member
in 2006-2007. He is a former member of the Australian Institute of Marine
Science Council; the Cooperative Research Centres Committee; the National
Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy Committees; and of the
Industry and Technology Council of South Australia, the Premier's Science
and Research Council, and the South Australian Wine Industry Council.
Dr Wendy Craik AM
Deputy Chancellor
Commissioner of the Productivity Commission

In 2009 Wendy was appointed Acting Full Time Commissioner with the
Productivity Commission.
Previous to this, Wendy was the Chief Executive of the Murray-Darling Basin
Commission (MDBC), President of the National Competition Council and Chair
of the Australian Fisheries Management Authority and of the National Rural
Advisory Council.
She has also worked as a consultant for AcilTasman Consulting. Dr Craik is a
member of the Board of the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal and has
been a member of a variety of other boards and Advisory Councils.
Wendy was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2007 for her
contribution to natural resource management and rural policy.

Terry Evans

Terry Evans is presently engaged as Special Counsel for Minter Ellison
Lawyers, Adelaide. Prior to that he was the Deputy Chief Executive and then
Acting Chief Executive for the Justice Department and South Australian
Attorney General’s Department (2004-2006). He was the Chief Commercial
Counsel in the Crown Solicitor’s Office from 1996-2004. Before that Terry
was a partner with Minter Ellison and was its managing partner for several
years. Terry holds a number of board positions in the corporate, government
and not-for-profit sectors.

Rick Sarre

Dr Rick Sarre is Professor of Law and Criminal Justice at the University of South Australia. He was, from 1992 to 1998, the Head of the School of Law and Legal Practice, University of South Australia. He currently lectures in criminology, policing, media law and commercial law with the School of Commerce and the School of Law. His qualifications include an undergraduate degree in law (Adelaide University), undergraduate studies in religion and sociology (Graceland University, Iowa, USA), and post-graduate degrees in criminology (University of Toronto, Canada) and law (University of Canberra, ACT). He was Visiting Library Fellow, Newhouse Center, Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA in 1990, spent time with the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) in Hong Kong and Australian Lawyers for Refugees Port Hedland in 1992, was Visiting Professor at Graceland University, Iowa in 1997 and was Visiting Research Professor at Umeå University, Sweden in 2004. He received a Citation from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council in 2008.

Ms Pauline Carr

Pauline Carr has over 25 years of management and commercial experience in
the resources industry with both Australian and international companies. In
addition she has over 15 years comprehensive compliance and governance
experience with listed company boards.
Previously Pauline was a senior executive with Normandy Mining Limited,
where she was actively involved in the company’s growth, its corporate
activities and its international expansion. As a member of Newmont Mining
Corporation’s regional executive team she then held several roles including
Executive General Manager – Group Secretariat and Services and Director -
Business Development and Continuous Improvement.
She is presently providing management, business improvement, governance,
compliance and risk consultancy services to companies in the resources,
construction and superannuation sectors.
Pauline has served as an executive director of many entities and was the
chair of a corporate superannuation plan for several years. She was a member
of the Export Council and is presently a member of the South Australian
Mining and Petroleum Expert Group (SAMPEG), the Resources Industry
Development Board and the South Australian National Parks and Wildlife
Council.
Mr Bill Cossey

Term of appointment: until 31 December 2012
Bill retired in 2004 from the position of Chief Executive of the State
Courts Administration Authority, a position he held for five years.
Prior to joining Courts, Bill was the Deputy Chief Executive of the
Department of Industry and Trade and Chief Executive Officer of the Adelaide
Festival Centre Trust. Bill has also held the Chief Executive Officer
positions of other State Government Departments — those being the State
Services Department, the Office of Business and Regional Development and the
Office of the Government Management Board.
Bill is active as a volunteer in a number of organisations, being a member
of the governing bodies of the University of South Australia, the Don
Dunstan Foundation and Tennis SA.
He is also a Board member of the Government’s Social Inclusion Board (since
2004), Elderly Citizens’ Homes (ECH), the Energy Industry Ombudsman’s Board
and the Savings and Loans Credit Union.

Bruce Linn

Bruce Linn is an experienced Company Director and formerly CEO of Finlaysons Lawyers based in Adelaide, South Australia.
His previous executive roles include Executive Director for EDS, responsible for all State Government business of EDS in Australia and Chief Executive of Camtech, one of Australia's leading Internet & Electronic Payments companies.
A Science graduate of The University of Adelaide, he has over 30 years experience in business management, leadership, marketing and information communications technology.
Current Directorships and Board positions include the Council and Finance Committee of The University of South Australia, the boards of SABRENet Limited, St. Peters Collegiate Girls School, the SA/NT Division Council of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and as Chair of Community Information Strategies Australia (CISA).
He is a fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and the Australian Computer Society.
Ms Paula Nagel

Paula Nagel’s current major consulting role is International Education
Adviser attached to the University City Project with the Department of
Premier and Cabinet.
Previously Paula was Chair of Education Adelaide, Marketing Manager of
Foundation SA, and a Senior Consultant at Morgan & Banks. In 1997 she
established her own company, NBC Resources, a management consultancy that
organised board and other high level appointments and provided a range of
marketing services. She also established a number of new industry
development boards for the South Australian Government.
She has been a member of the Export Council of South Australia, board member
and Ring Cycle board member of the State Opera and board member of the
Jamfactory. In 2006 in recognition of her work in international education
she received the Asia Pacific Business Women’s Council “Woman of Distinction
in Education” Award.
Paula is currently a member of the board of the Governor’s Leadership
Foundation, the Academic Board of Le Cordon Bleu and the Minister of
Tourism’s Round Table. She is also a Fellow of the Australian Institute of
Company Directors and an ambassador for the National Breast Cancer
Foundation.
Ms Corinne Namblard

Term of appointment: until 31 December 2013
Corinne Namblard has had approximately 30 years’ experience in finance,
infrastructure and related industries having worked in the United States,
Canada, United Kingdom, Europe and Australia.
She has most recently been CEO of Luxembourg based transport equity fund,
Galaxy Fund. Before that she spent 19 years with Banque Nationale de Paris
where she held roles in foreign exchange, debt and equity capital markets,
mergers and acquisitions and project finance.
Ms Namblard has also held an executive committee level Business Development
role with French engineering firm Egis Group.
Ms Namblard held numerous board positions in investee companies including
South Australia Flinders Ports. She also chaired the Geneva based United
Nations PPP Alliance and is one of the Transport and Infrastructure Experts
for the European Commission.
Ms Namblard was most recently appointed to the board of Qantas as a
non-executive director and she has been nominated to the Board of CODAN.
Professor Leanna Read

Term of appointment: until 16 December 2013
Leanna is a founder of Adelaide biotechnology company, TGR BioSciences,
and has been the CEO since the company’s incorporation in June 2001. Leanna
holds a Bachelor of Agricultural Science (Hons), PhD, FTSE, MAICD. She is a
physiologist by training with over 90 scientific papers and is an inventor
on two patents in-licensed by TGR. She has led successful research and
commercial ventures, including the CRC for Tissue Growth and Repair, widely
considered to be one of the most successful commercially focused CRCs. Her
contributions to the biotechnology industry have been recognised by
appointment to boards such as the Prime Minister's Science, Engineering and
Innovation Council, the Federal Government’s Industry Research & Development
Board and the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Scheme
Committee. She also serves on the SA Economic Development Board and the SA
Premier’s Science and Research Council and she is a Fellow of the Australian
Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering.
Leanna holds adjunct professorial positions at Flinders University as well
as University of SA, and has been awarded the highest commendation from both
universities: A Convocation Medal from Flinders University and Doctor of the
University from University of SA. Leanna has received several industry
awards including the inaugural Biotechnology Industry Service Award by the
Australian Biotechnology Association (now AusBiotech); a Centenary Medal for
services to the IR&D Board and its committees; the 2006 SA Premier’s Award
for Science, Technology and Innovation Management Excellence; and the 2006
South Australian of the Year in the Category of Science and Technology.

Ms Tanya Hosch
Term of appointment: until 31 December 2014
Tanya works primarily in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander affairs
and other areas of social policy including young people, women's issues and
some areas of health. This work is balanced with work as a part time board
director and committee member. Previous positions have included the
Australian Indigenous Leadership Centre, the Foundation for Young
Australians and was a co-founder, former Trustee and inaugural Chairperson
of the National Indigenous Youth Movement of Australia.
Tanya serves as a Director on the Rio Tinto Aboriginal Foundation, and in
2009 was appointed as a Director of the inaugural board of The Australian
Centre for Social Innovation. Tanya is a Board Member of the Australian
Centre for Social Justice and since 2006 she has been a Board Member for
International Funders of Indigenous Peoples based in North America.
Tanya holds a position as a Visiting Research Fellow with the University of
Technology, Sydney and is currently working on the process for developing
options for the establishment of a new National Indigenous Representative
Body.

Associate Professor Pat Buckley
Term of appointment: until 31 December 2013
Pat Buckley is the Dean Research & Research Education in the Division of
Health Sciences at The University of South Australia. She is the elected
academic staff member on the University’s Council from December 2011.
A biochemist-turned-physiologist by training, Pat has been at UniSA since
2005: prior to that, she was Head of Physiology at The University of
Adelaide. Her current position focuses on the development of research
capacity and capability in Health Sciences, and she also leads the
University’s Research Leadership Development and Early Career Research
Development programs. She continues to teach physiology to students in many
health-related degrees. She is currently the President of the South
Australian Branch of the Perinatal Society of Australia & New Zealand.

Carol Sutherland

Carol Sutherland is Division Director: Services, in the Division of Business, and is the elected professional staff member on the University’s Council from December 2011.
Carol has held the role of Division Director: Services since 2007 following a number of other management roles in the Learning and Teaching Unit and the Marketing and Development Unit. Prior to joining the University in 1996, Carol had worked in politics over a fifteen year period, having been a policy and media advisor to Ministers, Senators, and MPs in the federal government.
Carol is a member of Division Executive for the Division of Business and is
responsible for a wide range of support services to the Division. She is
involved in a broad range of the University’s core business, including as a
member of several university-wide committees and steering groups.

Melissa Davies is the Undergraduate Student member of University Council elected by members of UniLife to take up her appointment in 2011 for a term of one year.
Melissa is undertaking a double degree in Bachelor of Journalism and Bachelor of Arts (Writing and Creative Communication).

Matthew Walton was elected by the students of UniSA as Postgraduate
Student Representative for 2012.
Matthew has a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Adelaide and is
currently studying a Masters of Business Administration.
Matthew has worked for the Australian Council of Trade Unions, Senators and
Federal Members of Parliament where he advised on the Justice, Police, and
Treasury portfolios. Matthew is currently working as an advisor to the South
Australian Minister for Finance and the Public Sector.
