From vacation to publication

After just six weeks working on a Vacation Research Scholarship, marketing student Sarah Williams is now a published author.
When the undergraduate marketing student applied for a Vacation Research Scholarship over summer with the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute she never imagined her research would end up published.
“Seeing my article published in an industry magazine was really exciting - after all the hard work it was great to see the finished product,” Sarah said.
Her research, which aimed to find out what made taglines like “Not Happy Jan” known and loved by Australians, was published in an article she co-authored for Direct Magazine.
“I’ve always been interested in advertising and media, so I was really excited to work on this project,” she said.
“I learnt how to analyse data and translate results into meaningful findings that people in industry would find interesting.”
The Ehrenberg-Bass Institute offers Vacation Research Scholarships to high performing marketing students each year.
Students are paired with a senior researcher who guides them through a specialised research project.
Vacation Scholarship Coordinator, Dr Nick Danenberg, said the program gives students the opportunity to get hands-on marketing experience while completing their degree.
“They get experience working in a business environment and learn skills that are attractive to employers,” he said.
The program runs for around eight weeks over the summer break and, as well as experience, scholars receive $300 per week for the duration of the project.
Sarah will graduate from her Bachelor of Management (Marketing) undergraduate degree later this year and is looking forward to starting her career in marketing.
“This experience will help give my CV an edge and set me apart from the crowd in the competitive job market,” she said.
