Visit to USA Feb. 17th to Mar. 2nd, 2010 American Bar Association and Resources Legacy Fund

Professor Jennifer McKay (PDF 23.09 kb) appeared at the Washington legislature to comment on the Australia's legal and policy response to water supply and climate change developments (please note that Prof MaKay's presentation appears about 6 minutes into the video, many thanks).

Project Background:
Prof McKay has played a leading role in Australia's debates over water governance, particularly in light of climate change.  In recent years, Australia has accomplished fundamental change in its water law, policy and management, in response to prolonged, severe drought now perceived as "the new normal".  The Australian water community has widely accepted these changes in response to climate change that already has occurred.

In February 2010, Prof McKay spoke on "Lessons from Australia" at the American Bar Association's 28th Annual Water Law Conference in San Diego. As part of her visit to the United States, she has met with state water officials and water lawyers in California, Washington and Utah.  The ABA Water Resources Committee has arranged Prof McKay's travel and meetings, with support from the Resources Legacy Fund.  These meetings have considered climate change and water management, as well as how Australia's experience may inform decisions for the Sacramento-San Joaquin River basin, Columbia River basin and the Colorado River basin.
